What is a Calculatrice de Mensualité (EMI)?

EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed amount a borrower pays each month on a loan — the same figure a bank's loan quote shows, computed from the reducing-balance formula rather than a flat interest estimate, which is why the monthly figure stays constant even though the interest/principal split within it shifts every month.

How to use the Calculatrice de Mensualité (EMI)

  1. Enter the loan amount, annual interest rate, and term in months
  2. Press Calculate EMI
  3. The monthly installment, total payment, and total interest appear instantly, computed on your device

Formula

EMI = P × r × (1+r)ⁿ ÷ ((1+r)ⁿ − 1), where P = principal, r = monthly interest rate, n = number of months

The annual rate you enter is converted to a monthly rate (÷12) internally — you never need to do that conversion yourself.

Example

A $500,000 loan at 8.5% annual interest over 60 months works out to an EMI of $10,258.27/month — a total repayment of $615,496, of which $115,496 is interest on top of the original principal.

Frequently asked questions

What does EMI stand for?

Equated Monthly Installment — the fixed monthly payment on a loan, calculated so principal and interest are fully paid off by the end of the term while the payment amount itself never changes.

Does the interest portion of an EMI change over time?

Yes — even though the total EMI stays fixed, the split between principal and interest shifts every month. Early payments are mostly interest (since the outstanding balance is highest); later payments are mostly principal, as the balance shrinks. See Mortgage Calculator's amortization schedule for a visual breakdown.

Does this account for prepayment or foreclosure?

No — this calculates the standard fixed EMI schedule assuming no early payments. Prepaying principal partway through a loan shortens the payoff or lowers future EMIs in ways this simple calculator doesn't model.

Does the EMI include processing fees or insurance?

No — this is principal and interest only. Real loan offers often add a one-time processing fee and sometimes bundled insurance, which would raise the effective cost beyond what's shown here.
