Formula
GPA = Σ(grade points × credit hours) ÷ Σ(credit hours)
A credit-weighted average, not a plain average of grade points — each course's contribution scales with how many credit hours it's worth.
Example
A semester of Calculus I (A, 4 credits), English Composition (B+, 3 credits), Chemistry (A-, 4 credits), and Physical Education (B, 1 credit) works out to a 3.642 GPA — not a flat average of the four grade points, because the 1-credit PE class pulls far less weight than the two 4-credit courses.
Common mistakes
- Entering a course's fields out of order — the format is strictly "name, grade, credits", so swapping grade and credits breaks parsing.
- Using a plus/minus grade like "A-" on the Simple scale, which only recognizes whole letters (A, B, C, D, F).
- Forgetting a low grade in a high-credit course pulls the GPA down more than the same grade in a 1-credit course would.
- Mixing a single semester's courses with a request for cumulative GPA — list every course from every term if you want the cumulative figure.

How is GPA calculated?
Each grade is converted to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on), multiplied by that course's credit hours, summed across all courses, then divided by the total credit hours — a credit-weighted average, not a plain average of the grade points.
Will this match my school's official GPA?
It uses the standard 4.0 scale (with or without +/- grades), which most US institutions follow — but some schools use a different scale (a 4.3 for A+, or a 5.0 scale for honors courses), so treat this as a close estimate and confirm against your school's own grading policy for anything official.
What format do I enter courses in?
One course per line, as "name, grade, credits" — for example "Calculus I, A, 4". The name can contain spaces, but avoid extra commas within it since the first two commas are used to split the fields.
Does a Pass/Fail or Withdrawal grade count?
Only if you enter it as one of the recognized letter grades on your chosen scale — this tool doesn't have a separate Pass/Fail or W option, since most schools exclude those from the official GPA calculation entirely.
