VAT Calculator

Add VAT to a net price or remove it from a VAT-inclusive price, at any rate.

🔒 Processed on your device

Handles both directions of a VAT calculation: adding VAT onto a net price (common when quoting a B2C price from a B2B cost) and — the step people get wrong more often — extracting the net price and VAT amount from a price that already includes VAT, which needs dividing by (1 + rate), not just subtracting a flat percentage.

Example: A gross, VAT-inclusive price of $120 at a 20% VAT rate has a net price of $100 (not $96, which is what subtracting 20% directly would wrongly give) — remove mode divides by 1.20 first, then reports the $20 VAT as the difference.

How it works

  1. Choose whether you're adding VAT to a net price or removing it from a gross price
  2. Enter the price and the VAT rate
  3. The net, VAT, and gross amounts appear instantly, calculated on your device

Frequently asked questions

How do you remove VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price?

Divide the gross price by (1 + VAT rate/100), not by subtracting the percentage directly. A $120 price including 20% VAT has a net price of $120 / 1.20 = $100 — subtracting 20% of $120 directly would wrongly give $96.

What is VAT?

Value Added Tax — a consumption tax applied at each stage of production/sale in the UK, EU, and many other countries, usually already included in the displayed retail price rather than added at checkout like US sales tax.
